My name is Jane Van Houten and I have had the
privilege of teaching at St. Andrew's since 2002. I am a graduate
from Interlochen Arts Academy and Michigan state University
with a Bachelors of Music and Performance. I am now working
on my Masters from Aquinas College for a Master's in Teaching.
My educational philosophy is that all children
innately have the gift of music and it is through process oriented
teaching that this gift will evolve and grow. I feel very strongly
about expanding the current curriculum to having even a higher
sense of music literacy so that each child leaving St. Andrew's
school will take with them an understanding of how music is
constructed as well as performed. My goal is to provide musical
opportunities to the students within the classroom setting as
well as outside performance venues to encourage the joy of performance.
They will find positive feedback it provides to the team effort
that music can only provide. I also believe that music can bring
us spiritually to a higher plane. Through the preparations of
liturgies as well as other spiritually based activities the
students will learn how powerful song and music is when it is
in praise of God.
I have four kids. I love art museums and foreign
films.
